After a dramatic elimination of two players from the top 4 to the heads-up by Wei Tan, Chih Wei Fan overcame incredible odds against the Malaysian player to claim the coveted title and the highest prize in his career, amounting to 3,067,000 Taiwanese dollars (~99,000 USD).
The USOP Super Star Challenge, debuting in Vietnam, has become one of the most popular events in Asia. It continued to prove itself in Taiwan, with 62 athletes contributing 160,000 Taiwanese dollars (~5,120 USD) for the buy-in. As the most expensive tournament on the USOP Taiwan list, some of the world's top opponents included John Tech from the Philippines, Hoang Hai Nam from Vietnam, and Triton Cyprus Main Event champion Punnat Punsri from Thailand.
From 5BB to the Championship
While John Tech fell short before the In The Money (ITM) stage, Punsri stopped in 9th place, and Hoang Hai Nam made it to the final table, finishing in 4th place. Just before Nam's defeat, Calvin Kean Wei Tan of Malaysia took the chip lead after a failed bluff by Chih Wei Fan, dropping him to just 5 BB. After a double-up, a wild three-way showdown ensued quickly, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.
Excitement and suspense continued. Chih Wei Fan had 14 BBs, while Wei Tan had 66 BBs. He dropped to 7 BBs, doubled up, and cracked aa with a5 on the 710qjk board. This helped Fan take a slight lead and conclude the match with a hand of KK.
